My Story:
After WJ, I attended Cornell University, spending a Jr. Year abroad in Copenhagen. I graduated with a degree In Human Development. With an interest in adolescent psychology and delinquency, I moved to Cambridge,Mass. where I worked as the 1st female counselor at Hastings House, a facility for hard core, high risk boys-quite the learning experience and a very successful program.
After 2 years, I left to complete a masters degree in psychology at Lesley College. It was a wonderfully experiential and progressive program. Upon graduation, a friend and I decided on a trip to Central America which turned out to be a year long odyssey.
When I returned to the US, I moved to California. Wanting to practice a more holistic approach to treatment of the psyche and body, I went back to school part time to fulfill the science requirements and started at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1978. It was during this time that I met my husband, Will Smith. We practiced in a multi-disciplinary clinic there until 1988 when our son Arren was born.
Not wanting to live in the LA area any longer, we bought a small RV and spent a year traveling- exploring and visiting loved ones throughout the country. After this adventure, we settled in Carmel Valley, California, a beautiful small town north of Big Sur and south of San Francisco- where we have remained. I live with my husband, 2 children, 2 dogs and cat, on the Carmel River,feeling fortunate to be able to hike the Ventana Wilderness from my backyard.
I work part-time at our clinic with my husband, specializing in the health care of women and children. Having a longtime Zen meditation practice, I am leading a meditation group locally and have started mindfulness programs in our local middle and high schools. I also teach workshops and facilitate retreats addressing how we nourish and care for ourselves and each other, most recently conducting a 4 day retreat at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in California.
