Sally Newman, of Garrett Park, Maryland, passed away in June, 2024, from cancer. She is survived by daughter Sara, son Jonathan, two grandchildren, spouse Judy, and brother Carl. Sally was a computer specialist. Before WJ, Sally went Garrett Park Elementary and Kensington Junior High. Afterwards, she attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Sally was smart, funny, unconventional and without artiface of any kind. She was devoted to her family, adored the Town of Garrett Park (where she grew up), and loved the rock opera "Tommy". Sally attended many WJ reunions. She will be missed. This In Memory entry will be updated if more information becomes available.

I was in many classes with Sally all through KJH and WJ. We also served together on the staff of the Spectator literary magazine. And both our fathers were PhD mathematicians, a shared connection whose significance is hard to pin down. I was a little outside her tight circle of friends, but still got to know her pretty well, especially during AP English with Miss Baker, senior year. A highlight of that class for me was a group project on Don Quixote (the other members were Meg Durham and Ed Huff) which met several times at Sally’s house in Garrett Park. Sally was super smart, with an off-beat sense of humor (the novels of Emily Loring, anyone?) that baffled a lot of people but which I found refreshing. I had a really nice chat with her at the 40th reunion. I am very sorry to learn of her passing.
