It really made me quite sad to see that Stephen was in this list. I remember how much he encouraged me to make one of the reunions, I think it was the 1989 meet up, but I was living in India at the time and just couldn't. I'll always regret not seeing Stephen then. He was a really good person.
Steve lived down the street and was the brother of a good friend of mine. He was a great guy and I was sad when I heard he had passed. The last time I saw him, he told me it was very important to smile so that when we are old, we will have nice wrinkles instead of frowny wrinkles.
Stephen was a good friend to me during what I think was called Senior Seminars -- a questionable social studies class that the instructor often ditched, leaving us to hang out, do New York Times crossword puzzles, or otherwise fill the time. I remember long talks with him, and also a fragment of a poem he wrote, adapted from an old children's rhyme, which has stuck with me: "Run, run, as fast as you can/ You can't catch me/ I'm the gingerbread." I would have enjoyed reconnecting before he passed.
